Widely Used Antioxidant Supplement May be Killing You

One of the most popular antioxidants on the market, beta-carotene, has been linked to higher risks of fatal heart disease and stroke.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, researchers examined data from 884 previous studies, which included 883,627 participants, for the aforementioned findings.

They found that beta-carotene, which is present in fatty acids, magnesium, zinc and other synthetic supplements, is quite dangerous to human life.

Speaking about beta-carotene, nutritionist Jonah Berdius said that omega-3 fatty acids, and folate, reduce the risk of heart diseases if consumed in sufficient amounts. However, it is not certain how beta-carotene increases the risk of heart disease, he said.

He added that anything consumed in excess leads to serious health effects. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor before taking supplements, adds Jonah Berdius.

Additionally, he emphasized that beta-carotene supplements are not recommended for the public and added that several studies show that it has harmful effects on smokers because it causes lung damage. The chances of cancer also increase.

On the other hand, Jonah Berdius revealed that natural beta-carotene from green, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables helps the body to form vitamin A, which is important for eyes and skin.

He concluded that supplements should never replace food and added that they should only be used if there is a deficiency that should first be identified by doctors.
