Harry Kane is set to join the England squad despite suffering an ankle injury during Bayern Munich’s win over Darmstadt on Saturday.
Gareth Southgate had reason for concern when the England captain twisted his ankle and had to be substituted late in the 5-2 victory.
According to Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel, Kane reportedly suffered an ankle twist entangled in the goal netting. The 30-year-old is set to undergo a scan for further evaluation.
Christoph Freund, Bayern’s sporting director, mentioned that Kane’s condition will be assessed once he returns to England. England, led by Southgate, is scheduled to face Brazil on Saturday and Belgium the following Tuesday, with both matches slated to take place at Wembley Stadium. These fixtures are part of England’s ongoing preparations for Euro 2024.
In a statement released by the German team, it was noted: “Despite the injury, the striker has proceeded with his international duty with England. He will receive treatment from the team doctors there, in coordination with the medical staff at FC Bayern.”
Last week, Southgate included Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney in his 25-man squad, notably selecting the Brentford striker despite his recent eight-month betting suspension. Nevertheless, the England manager will place emphasis on ensuring the fitness of his captain and main forward for the upcoming high-profile friendlies.
Kane continued his impressive performance at Bayern by achieving a new milestone, setting a record for the most goals scored in a debut Bundesliga season during the match against Darmstadt.
Despite his exceptional talent, the ex-Tottenham forward has faced recurring ankle injuries in the past. Bayern has emphasized that Kane’s fitness will not be jeopardized, and precautions will be taken to avoid any potential risks.
Speaking to Bayern’s official website on Saturday, Tuchel disclosed, “Kane twisted his ankle after getting caught in the goal netting. He has been consistently applying ice to the affected area since then.”
“We are currently awaiting updates. Until we receive further information, we can only hope for the best and trust that the situation isn’t serious,” remarked the source.
